Axiom Space Announces International Collaboration for Upcoming Ax-4 Mission

(Houston, Texas) Axiom Space today (Aug. 5) announced a partnership with India, Poland, and Hungary – with support from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and European Space Agency (ESA) – to send three astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) on Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), the company’s next commercial human spaceflight mission to the orbiting lab.

The Ax-4 team includes Commander Peggy Whitson, Mission Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla of India, Mission Specialist Sławosz Uznański of ESA/Poland, and Mission Specialist Tibor Kapu of Hungary. The crew members arrived in Houston today (Aug. 5) to begin training with Axiom, NASA, and SpaceX.

The crewmembers’ participation is pending approval from the Multilateral Crew Operations Panel (MCOP), which includes representatives from NASA, [The European Space Agency] (ESA)(https://www.esa.int/), Roscosmos, The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and The Canadian Space Agency.

This mission expands horizons for nations aiming to advance their scientific, technological, and economic goals. The Ax-4 mission – which will launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft from Florida – will focus on scientific research, technology demonstrations, and the commercialization of space. It aims to promote international cooperation by sharing knowledge, resources, and opportunities, strengthening the participating nations’ roles in the space community, per Axiom.

"I am excited to command my second commercial human spaceflight mission with Axiom Space," said Peggy Whitson, Ax-4 commander in the Axiom press release. "With a culturally diverse crew, we are advancing scientific knowledge and fostering international collaboration. Our previous missions set a strong foundation, and with Ax-4, we bring more nations to low-Earth orbit, extending humanity’s reach among the stars."

The Ax-4 crew will spend up to 14 days on the space station, and the mission marks the second time Axiom Space has included an ESA astronaut, continuing their collaboration by sending a Polish astronaut to space for the first time in over 40 years, per Axiom.

Axiom Space has strengthened its relationship with Hungary through a memorandum of understanding and a spaceflight framework agreement, facilitating the launch of a Hungarian astronaut. A similar agreement was signed with ISRO in July, marking a significant step towards a joint ISRO-NASA effort on the ISS.

With Ax-4, Axiom Space continues to push the boundaries of international collaboration and space exploration, paving the way for future advancements and opportunities in the global space industry.
